Stanhope Primary School

Foreign Languages

欢迎

Welcome

Stanhope Primary’s Mandarin and Chinese culture curriculum was launched in March 2019.

At Stanhope Primary School our choice of foreign language is Mandarin. We believe that every child should be given the opportunity to acquire understanding in a modern foreign language. They will be taught a measure of fluency in the language, communication and pronunciations. They will also be taught how to engage in short and long conversation with their peers.

Every class from Nursery to Year 6 will take part in weekly Mandarin lessons. These lessons are taught by our specialist Mandarin teachers. We follow a programme of study which is in line with the National Curriculum. Children are given the opportunity to engage in practical learning using concrete resources. They are encouraged to express their language acquisition among themselves.

Aims

  • To ensure that all pupils understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • To ensure that all pupils speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • To ensure that all pupils can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • To ensure that all pupils discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in Mandarin.

“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.”

Children were entertained with specialist Martial Arts, Dance and Musical performances by international students from London South Bank University at our Mandarin launch assembly. The children love exploring the Chinese culture and their weekly Mandarin lessons.
