Our Curriculum

 

In year 1, for the first half term, we are going to be learning about our Local Area, children will be exploring local shops, buildings and their journeys from home to school. Below is a curriculum overview of the Autumn term:

Phonics

 

At Stanhope, we follow the Letters and Sounds scheme and we teach phonics daily.

In preparation for the phonics check, children will be learning to read real words and alien words,

Writing

 

Children are required to learn to read and write the 100 high frequency words and the common exception words. 

 

The Handwriting scheme that we follow is the Nelson’s handwriting scheme. Children can practise correct letter formation at home - Please see the web link below.

At Stanhope we aim to teach children to:

  • Read with fluency, accuracy and understanding.
  • Develop an understanding and appreciation of literacy, non-fiction and non-literary texts.
